Romulus - Fernand Hibbert
Romulus was originally published in French and Kreyòl in 1908 by Fernand Hibbert, a celebrated Haitian author, journalist and diplomat. Canadian translator Matthew Robertshaw has now made Hibbert's work available for the first time in English. The story takes place in 1883 when a group of exiled Haitian liberals disembark at the seaside town of Miragoâne, with the goal of overthrowing the authoritarian government of President Lysius Salomon. Miragoâne's residents are forced to take sides as their town is transformed into a battleground. Romulus Joseph, a simple police commissioner, find himself taking part in the uprising although he never fully grasps the philosophy of the rebellion.
