The Communist victories in Cambodia and Vietnam in 1975 end a long and devastating war, but for some, the new era is one of persecution. Quan, a boy, and his family are sent by the Khmer Rouge to languish in a collective farm along the Thai border. Minh Chau, a young girl, is imprisoned in Saigon with her mother and older sister because of her father's service in the South Vietnamese Army. Quan and Minh Chau later meet in a refugee camp in Malaysia where he becomes the young girl’s protector. When Quan must use violence to save her from an attack, he forfeits his chance to go with Minh Chau and her family to Canada. In Quebec City, Mathieu Hibou, a university student, helps the family integrate into Canadian society before leaving to work in Africa. Mathieu suffers an unimaginable loss during the Rwandan genocide, a loss that Minh Chau will later help to heal. Then Quan finds his way illegally to Canada, meets Minh Chau again and tragedy strikes again. Soldier, Lily, Peace and Peace is an endearing tale of compassion, love, healing and heroic sacrifice.
